Book Alterations | Thread Light Through Eye of Storm by Gerda GovinePrologue

Alterations | Thread Light Through Eye of Storm is a metaphor of life. Poetry weaves the threads of my experience into whole cloth embellished by the handiwork of nature and seasoned women who birth beauty. The words flow and fly while I lean in smell salty air, feel morning mist, face the wind and see thunder bow at the altar of lightening.  I remember handmade dresses: peach linen embroidered with strawberries, holy communion white eyelet puff sleeves, and red /white flocked polka dot organdy collars trimmed with lace. These images bridge and balance two different and important themes as I write my way home.

Review by Luivette Resto, author of Unfinished Portrait and Ascension

“In Alterations|Thread Light Through Eye of Storm, Gerda Govine Ituarte takes the reader through childhood memories, colorful as a kaleidoscope, of walking home from school and a Harlem summer. We read about the power of words with warriors who do not see another option other than their hands. Visually and lyrically, the title poem compliments the spirit of the collection with its concrete form. Govine Ituarte’s latest collection delivers with a tapestry of truth, heritage, and imagery.”

Teresa Mei Chuc, author of Year of the Hare and Red Thread

"In Gerda Govine Ituarte's poetry collection, Alterations/Thread Light Through Eye of Storm, the poet weaves a luminous thread through personal history, history of women and of Mother Earth. Traveling with the speaker as she threads her stories through rainbows, tornadoes, mothers, blue sky, Bronx, Brooklyn, Harlem, raindrops, balconies and hurricanes, we plunge into the spell-binding music and lyric of Ituarte's language while mending our tears and writing our way home through the poet’s cloth…emerging with something hand-made, strong and embroidered in its own magic and light.”

Library Surprise

Musky scent chokes air.
                                Ancestors wait.

Layers of quietness float in rafters.
                                Ancestors feel.

Lonely aisles listen for staccato footsteps.
                                Ancestors watch.

Telescopic eyes scan titles.
                                Ancestors smile.

Thirst wrestles ravenous appetite.
                                Ancestors drink.

Tongue holds silent words.
                                Ancestors speak.
